The English Premier League is joining forces with the ball company Ball Corporation and the British soccer climate action network Planet League to launch a unique tournament for fans. The aim is to get supporters involved in green actions, which include eating meat-free meals and using reusable water bottles, to help their teams compete in the Planet League Cup. The winner is the team that collects the most points from fans who take climate-friendly actions.

The planet liga tournament is set to run from October to January. Arsenal Foundation, Manchester United Foundation and Tottenham Hotspur Foundation are among the clubs competing in the event along with 71 other football charities. The goal is to inspire people to take part and win money-can’t-buy prizes, which are based on the popular internet phrase “pics or it didn’t happen.”

Planet League was founded to use the power of football to encourage more players and their fans to live greener lives. The organization says it has already seen more than 200,000 verified eco-friendly Planetliga actions recorded on its platform. Its work has attracted the attention of former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher and Tottenham Hotspur winger Lucas Moura.

Fleetwood Town Community Trust will be helping the club on its journey to more sustainable operations, working with Planet League on the campaign. Ahead of Tuesday’s match against Forest Green Rovers, the trust will be educating supporters on how to participate in the planet liga campaign.

In the game, players control their own spacecrafts in an interplanetary space battle, navigating a two-dimensional well 6 spaces wide and 12 spaces tall. Identical-sized square blocks (panels) of different colors are stacked in the well, and they align according to an invisible grid. Each player’s position in the well determines their ranking in a series of tournaments called League Sanctioned games. The top eleven teams choose a champion to send to the Championship match, where they reign over the Echo Cluster until another challenger unseats them.
